Mark took some time out last week due to a disastrous result the week before from a good peg in an area that has been producing a few fish but as all anglers know this happens from time to time, so a week off and all wounds licked he was back on form, 6mm expander pellet and a positive attitude produced the bigger bream and even a winter tench, half his fish caught on the 8m line and the rest at 13m……..Marky is back.

This peg showed a bit of form Sunday but nothing like todays winning bag of the finest silver fish in Essex, it’s got to be Bill did look a bit excited at the prospect of drawing the winning peg from Sunday and soon propelled his way along the bank with a cheeky little grin firmly embossed on his chops, known at Lake John for the odd pre-match plunge Bill opted out today and approached the whole match in a positive and conventional manner, 13m of pole and a fairly reserved introduction of micro pellet at the start of the match with a 4mm expander to the hook, a fantastic days fishing for all today as temperatures lift slightly this week.

The weather men are telling us there is a beast from the east about to hit us, cold winds from Siberia and Russia are making angling a little bit uncomfortable to put it politely, Steve drew on the colder bank today and started on the ground bait and maggot but soon switched to a shorter 11m pellet line and managed to winkle out one or two better stamp of fish, this switch proved to be fruitful as Clarky collected the golden dollar.

Someone just back from his holiday and cocked the draw up so a re-draw was called and there was only one angler that really moaned, my apologise to everyone today but once again this place has thrown weights of fish in areas you just wouldn’t fancy, so even though I cocked up it might just be worth holding the moaning to the end of the match when the fat lady has stopped singing, anyway as the whistle blew the rain started and the wind blew a Hooley so this meant the long pole was going to be almost impossible, Colin started on the longer line 10m with micro pellet and maggot but could only catch roach just like Chris Vandervliet did during Sunday’s open, but a quick change of approach to the 6mm proved to be the edge he needed, bream to 3lb and almost 1lb skimmers, obviously worked the peg a bit harder than my mate Chris did on Sunday, proper angler well done Col…

Maggot and ground bait for Simon virtually a copy of his feature with Matt Godfrey and Pole Fishing magazine a couple of days earlier, cold weather forecast and even a mention of snow see the numbers drop this week but once again if you adapt your approach then this place can still provide a few fish, Simon proved once again that with good water craft and of course gifted with good looks and a pretty good stroke of luck in the draw bag anything is possible, I’m not even gonna mention the colour of his hair it’s just not important……………we will just leave it there, well done Si

A very accomplished angler and paired with his team mate Gary Miller in this years winter league Bill has proved that with this cheeky little win they are serious contenders for the crown this year, wet conditions again this week but it didn’t stop the silver fish from gorging on those 4mm expander pellets, two lines for Bill 11m and 13m and you will be pleased to know no anglers fell in during the making of this competition, arise sir Bill…………….my glass is raised for ya already mate.

Peg 32 was the winning peg this week; this is how good it can perform with a decent angler on it….

This peg was only good for third place on Sunday during the second round of the winter league and the reason for that is simple Vandervliet made a right pigs ear of it, anyway that’s enough about him Mark set to his peg on a shorter line with the knowledge of strong winds forecast so opted for the more manageable 10m line, fishing 4mm expander pellet over ground bait for very respectable days fishing mind you just like his old school mate Vandervliet its very rare you’ll see him on a bad peg either, lol, it’s really not worth winning a match here because you never get any praise from the bloke who writes these reports, and apparently there are a few people that log on and have a look just to see who is gonna get a gobbing off, this was true of Mark’s father in law Peter Dighton who regularly clicked on the site to have a read and chuckle at how well the boys have done on the match’s, sadly Peter passed away on Jan 3rd Saturday morning very suddenly. Mark would like to dedicate this win to Peter, who was also a regular club angler to Lake John and a sad loss, all our thoughts go out to family at this time from everyone at Lake John Fishery. Peter Dighton one of lifes true gentleman
