Wednesday Open Match 4th November 2015, Top Lake

Birthday boy Rob Dean has a days fishing and picks up the top prize in the process….

Rob Dean birthday win 4.11.2015
Rob Dean, Redbridge-Lake John, peg 3, 59-8-0

Rob Treats himself to a day off and draws the shortest walk to peg 3 which has shown a bit of form in the past few weeks so not a bad start to your 37th birthday, the match started slow for everyone and Rob scratched a few fish together early doors but it was at the half way stage that the peg switched on, 2 kilos of ground bait through the peg with worm and caster triggered the peg to life, these fish needed some serious feed a ball of ground bait every three fish was the formula with a worm head to the hook, a busy net of silvers and just one bonus carp, well done birthday boy you stopped two golden pegs….

Heavy rain fall normally is the kiss of death on the Wednesday open but not today, yet another great match…

paul solen 28.10.15

Paul Solen, Lake John-Hollow Angling, peg 11, 72-12-0

Solen is back with a vengeance and has a great day on the silvers with the odd interference from the odd carp or two, popped up bread in the early part of the match produced an early carp and then it was down to the not so long pole as the rain just kept falling as it had done most of the night, draw bag Solen found that 4mm expander at 10m and a very generous helping of micro pellets every put in, plenty of proper bream and two other carp that were above the 10lb Lake John rule, nice return to the lake for Mr drawbag Solen

Golden pegs were plentiful today so there was a high chance of it going this week and yep it was won by Prestons Jason Collins

jason collins 2015
Jason Collins, Preston, peg 33, 145-4-0

So Jay Collins rocks up with father and son Harold and a grin on his face all pleased to see me and i promptly reminded him he has been here for 5 years and what is he grinning for, anyway loads of micky taking about how he has aged terribly, we had to get down to the business of sorting the draw out, three golden pegs were draw and JC draws bang on the best peg in the world peg 33, bringing his Tylers Common skills to the venue Jason potted corn down the edge at 13m towards the boat house and snared 15 carp up to 16lb, proving that for a well established silver fish venue it has still got a huge head of big carp, a great performance from the Preston rod and a nice pocket full of dosh see you in another five years Jay, nice smile didn’t realise you had teeth you should show them more often they are in quite good order, great result JC

gordon bullock
Gordon Bullock, Redbridge Lakes, peg 10, 87-12-0

Gordon used to be a regular at the lake until five years ago when he realised his dream of Redbridge Lakes, now the days of travelling to other fishery’s is all but over, however this is the second time here and now on the leader board proving that this elephant hasn’t forgotten how its done at, fishing a shorter 10m line Gordon has fished a skimmer match which resulted in 40lb of silvers and then four carp just for good measure, the clocks go next weekend and the winter fishing at Lake John will begin, roll on the winter league.

So the last week we sore the Drennan KO stars commandeer the regular Wednesday open match but this week is back to normal and this year formidable force Mark (Slippery) Parris is back on top…

mark parris sunday victory
Mark Parris, Lake John-Hollow Angling, peg 30, 75-8-0

The wind was blowing into the Mark’s peg so this is always going to give an edge to the production of the peg but as the seasons change fast its now bait selection that is crucial, in recent weeks the method has been worm and ground bait on the longer pole but old slippery has stuck to his guns and fed micro pellet and fished a grain of corn over the top, a simple but effective method, two put back carp for 10lb and 55lb of silver fish and smaller carp on the 10m line…

The week the open match was postponed as we hosted the Drennan semi final on what was to be the wettest day of the year, and with some of the top names on the bank it was anyones match…

Drennan finalist 2015 wet as heck  tom scholy and me during the kiss   ,
Tom Scholey, Pole Fishing magazine, peg 14, 114-0-0

As the whistle blew the clouds opened and the rain fell and it did not let off all match this has been a great event until now so how would the semi final hold up under these conditions well it was surprisingly well and it was Tom’s day as an early carp on the long pole led into a second within an hour of the first this was a dream start from a great peg on the day, the worm and ground bait has been the trend over the past few weeks and Tom followed suit, skimmers and even tench where in the final catch, great lads the lot of ya, and another close match where one fish could have sent anyone threw to the final at Docklow Pools, go team Tom go…

The Yorkshire tourist Andy Oldham has yet another 3 hour journey down to the smoke to give the southern fairies another fishing lesson….

mat tom andy and me selfie
Andy Oldham, Frenzee-Bait Tech, peg 37, 188-0-0

Well the Drennan knockout semi final is next Wednesday and with a win last week on his maiden voyage Andy has more than doubled his weight from last week with the knowledge he has picked up along the way, Andy along with Mat Godfrey and Tom Scholey done a feature for Pole Fishing Magazine last Friday and followed that into Saturday for a practice session, so today’s result really does prove that if you put the work in you get the rewards, its no secret that the worm and ground bait is probably the strongest approach at present, but the Frenzee-Bait Tech man has been a busy boy when it comes to getting the feeding right, plenty of bait and exploring the peg produced this astonishing 188lb of silvers, and with five carp also hooked but not landed imagine what he could achieve if he lived 3 hours closer, in great form for next week Andy, i recon he has deffo got mushy peas it ta ground bait…

Andy Oldham 2.9.2015
Andy Oldham, Frenzee-Bait Tech, peg 10, 90-8-0

With the Drennan Knockout semi round the corner, Andy set off on a 2.5 hour journey from home to suss the place out for the big day which is only two weeks away, so this wasn’t a bad start as he drew a fair peg and with the worm and ground bait idea set firmly in his mind he took the percentage angle on the match and caught everything in the peg at 8m and walks away todays champion by the narrowest margin of 1lb, the nets was rammed full of silver fish, not a carp in site, a great result for the new boy on the block, great result today well done Andy

mark parris sunday victory
Mark Parris, Lake John-Hollow Angling, peg 14, 128-12–0

Slippery does it again, the format is the same its just the peg that changes and don’t get me started about the draw, another great draw for Mark and another great result as he once again gives em what they want, 4 big cups full of micro pellets to start and a single grain of corn to the hook and then its just a simple case of a kinder cup of micros every put in, simple and very effective some would say deadly, tow put back carp and 108lb of silver fish, awesome performance once again you slippery git…

Its not the anglers its the peg, and peg 33 once again does the biz, its got to be the best peg in England surely…. don’t get me wrong “Slip” knows his way round a few fish but the peg is legend….

mark parris 19.8.2015
Mark Parris, Lake John-Hollow Angling, peg 33, 97-8-0

Well its that peg again but this week it has fished completely out of sorts and even though its the same winning peg as last week it has fished so hard and bites were very fragmented so Parris had to put his thinking cap on and work out how best to get this peg to produce, margins were a no no so the 6m line in the deeper water, still the same volumes of feed and still corn to the hook but the bream were off the feed so “slip” went carp fishing, 5 put back carp for 10lb each a late run of skimmers was just enough on what was to be a packed 29 peg’er…
