Steve Crawley faces the bitter east wind for his first Lake John victory….

Steve Crawley 16.3.2016
Steve Crawley, Redbridge Lakes, peg 14, 48-8-0

The wind is still pushing from the east and that means its bloody cold, Steve set up a short pole at 6m and just plugged away catching whatever came through the peg slow to begin with but just like every other fishing match you have ever fished the peg just got better and better and all the while the wind got colder and colder, 6m pellet loose fed and hooked was the most basic but effective method today and the first win of many this year i’m sure, congratulations Steve…

Clever Trevor Stanley just pips the Amos to the top spot…

Trevor Stanley 23.12.2015

Trevor Stanley, Lake John Fishery, peg 33, 54-8-0

Trevski is on a roll at the moment the draw is being very very kind but he is doing the damage, years ago we used to call this Stanley corner because it was either him or his Dad that would draw it, it was a carp day again on the lake they are really playing a big part it the results this year, as the top two today both had a few big fish to boost the final tally, Darren Bates in third place had the only honest bag of skimmers

The Lakes have got there winter lids on and the attendances tumble, Five become Four this wednesday as Kenny Farrell heads home…

famous five wednesday open
Paul Solen, Lake John-Hollow Angling, peg 39, 36-0-0

Only one corner of the lake was fishable and the four crazy fools that wanted to continue the traditional mid week open started a little bit later with a walk off draw and battled it out for what was always going to be a hard slog, but fishing unto the ice with a dead red maggot shocked all, the bites were slow but the fish were big and Draw bag Solen surprised himself because he hasn’t had a combined weight like this in the past month, maggot over ground bait

Micky Scan 2015
Mick Scanlan, Oakwood Angling, peg 36, 67-4-0

  • We have had all the wind and rain you could wish for in the past few weeks so a break in the weather was very well come and Micky Scan wagered a win that you would be proud of in the summer months, 6mm expander pellet to the hook and a very generous pullting of pellet almost doubled the nearest weight, two carp and a plentiful day of bites, NICE….

Yet another battering from the wind meant pole presentation was going to be impossible…

Stuart Bracey New years eve, eve 30.12.15
Stuart Bracey, Shimano-Dynamite Baits, peg 12, 37-8-0, Golden peg

Stuart returns to the venue after a break of about 18 months and draws in a great area on the right hand bank, but the one factor you couldn’t allow for was the strength of the wind, this was a problem for 80% of the anglers today, Stuart started on the tip with a 12 inch hook length and a grain of corn to the hook for a very slow response but a change to a bunch of dead maggots with an open end feeder filled with micro’s and plugged with ground bait had an instant result, ignoring the fact Lake John is a reputable silver fish venue Stu turns into a carp angler and landed four knicks all the golden peg money, what a cheat and his mate Nigel Swallow next to him, give you a tip chaps don’t rock up and bag loads of carp on your first visit in god knows when and expect to be popular……lol, great to see Mr Bracey again, bloody cheat and golden peg thief.

Strong winds over the past couple of days was going affect how to approach todays near sell out open…

Trevor Stanley 23.12.2015
Trevor Stanley, Lake John Fishery, peg 11, 42-0-0

Trevor took the waggler approach today mainly due to the gusting wind and the fact that pole presentation was never going to be very easy, Trevski started the match on the popped up bread and had some success early doors with a bonus carp, but the waggler line and the 6mm expander to the hook a copy of the Ken Farrell tactics of weeks gone by was by far the best method, skimmers and bream plus yet another bonus carp all added to this festive win, this is an early Christmas present to his dear Mum who is on the road to recovery in hospital and with a bit of luck will be coming home tomorrow, here’s to a very Merry Christmas at the Stanley’s this year

  • Dan Varney, Drennan, peg 38, 37-12-0

Three wins in three for Kenny (the waggler) Farrell

ken farrell 9.12.2015
Ken Farrell, Lake John-Browning, peg 9, 38-8-0

Our old mate Ken has had a bit of a tuff year as i have said before but he seems to be on a bit of a recovery with this 3rd victory in a row, all on the 6mm expander pellet all on the waggler, skimmers and this week five tench were in the mix, another great performance from the Browning veteran ace, Ken and his winter league partner Andy (bonkers) Greggors look in good shape for the winter series

ken farrell 9.12.2015
Ken Farrell, Lake John-Browning, peg 30, 25-4-0

This was the first frost to speak about and therefore was always going put the weights down, but there is no knocking how close these matches are on the top lake this time of the year, so Kenny Farrell just does Kenny’s thing and keeps it simple and of course moans about nothing at all slowly winding everyone up as he nets yet another big skimmer, he loves winding people up lol, another pellet and waggler win for the Farrell, mean while Dan Varney and John Arthur complete a stopwatch feature and new Drennan keep nets and landing nets are delivered as Drennan come on board to sponsor the winter league this year, this is going to be a great series for all involved starts Sunday

Farrell wagglers his way to a golden peg victory, well come back King of the waggle Kenny…

ken farrell 011Ken Farrell, Lake John-Browning, peg 13, 47-8-0

Not been the kindest of years for our Ken as he remembers the first anniversary of the passing of his wife Jan, and understandably all his fishing has been put on the back burner that is until now, one of the finest waggler anglers to ever fish Lake John Fishery, Ken pumped up his 6mm expander pellets and fed the fish like it was a summers day, big pouches of pellet every put in got the fish in the mood for food, these mild conditions are ideal for a positive approach, skimmers and breams

Gary McClair golden peg win 25.11.15

Gary McClair, Hollow Angling, peg 14, 30-12-0

Only a sprinkling of anglers today so why not treat them all to a golden peg well by the end of the match that suited Gary down to the ground, maggot, worm and ground bait was the approach and with all the big carp finally starting to go to sleep the silver fish get into gear and make for good match scratching a few fish together, finally Gary manages a well deserved win at one of his favourite venues.
