Well the fishing was like that of a winters day as the fish were swimming around in groups thinking of only one thing and that wasn’t pellet’s or meat….

stanley Obrien Dunn 30th may 2015

Roy Stanley, Lake John Fishery, peg 8, 56-8-0

Roy made a last minute booking onto the match today and with a capacity attendance it was always going to be a tuff match but the fishing didn’t go to plan for most, the fish looked like spawning was possible and the anglers were thinking about the F.A. Cup final which kicks off at 5.30 this afternoon, Roy like most struggled to get bites anyway so it was a long pole tight as possible to the far bank with pellet which transformed an other wise quiet peg, pellet to the hook for a few skimmers and a some carp to 4lb

Browning-Hot Rod Andy Leathers saves the golden peg this week by a 1lb margin you have to concentrate all match chaps or it will cost …..

Andy Leathers 26th may 2015
Andy Leathers, Browning-Hot Rods, peg 26, 141-0-0

It looked like another golden peg was going to tumble this week as Roy Makins was the third to weight in and it looked like no-one on the match was going to get even close to 140lb that Roy put on the scales but when we got to the back of the lake the Browning man Mr Leathers said to me on the quiet that he thought he could push it close and how right was he, back to the venue now for a couple of weeks after a long spell away Andy has been close on occasions but today fishing no further out than 6m on meat and a second line down the left hand margin on corn Andy just kept switching and very unassumingly put together what was to be a golden peg stopping performance, proper skimmers and bream along with one carp and a couple of tench Andy just kept the peg flowing and what a match as the top six all smash the 100 lb barrier, these competitions just get better and better, you snooze you lose here, 100% effort or it will cost ya a place or five…..

The Basildon bomb shell Paul Hyde back on top the week, just how he likes it…

Paul Hyde Browning-Wickford, peg 2, 101-12-0

The weather people predicted bright sunshine but instead it persisted down with rain all morning and that cold water was just enough to stop the fish from spawning, just before the whistle the carp were having a go and a margin ban was enforced so it was 1m from any margin or margin feature but as soon as the rain fell the fish stopped having fun, but even so it has fished better than we all expected considering the weather and the margin ban, Basildon Bond wasn’t shaken or stirred by the enforcement and fished an honest line down the track and bagged up on the pellet, carp mainly with an assortment of silver fish , he did apparently have a quiet spell but he was a bit unsure when that was ha ha ha. I won’t tell you what we called him but you can guess, lol…

Well summer will probably join us some time soon but Darren Bates still managed a ton plus of fish and on a golden peg even though the weather is still toilet…..

Darren Bates 20th may 2015
Darren Bates, Lake John Fishery, peg 33, 111-12-0, golden peg

Sticking to the job in hand each week Darren finally had a big payday as he scopes a win on a golden peg, well if your going to have a win then why not do it on a golden peg, only two lines 6m down the left hand margins tight to the rushes and then when that dried up it was a second line straight out in front at 5m, corn over micro pellet dangled a good haul of silvers but there were three carp all under the 10lb allowance, a great result on a day where its still a bit cold and the fish still haven’t really got round to spawning.

Spoons is the main man today stopping the Basildon babe with a 10lb clear margin…

  Version 2
Kevin O’Brien, Lake John Fishery, peg 12, 77-0-0

Fishing was a bit harder today with a chance of the fish sporning stopped because of the heavy down pour on Thursday this week seems to have put the fish out of sink, everyone had plenty of fish in there pegs but the fish weren’t happy and so not feeding as they should, this didn’t stop Kevin trickling 4mm cubes of meat into every line and he caught steady on all lines, a mixture of skimmers and carp…….very pleasant day indeed for some, I drew peg 12 had 30lb and then after the match gifted £4 in side bets to Basildon Massive Hydie,Pennycook and Granty, and Redbridge royalty Mr Everitt, not good, not happy, not talking

Summer has finally arrived and the fish had only one thing on there mind and it wasn’t feeding so a 2m margin ban was in forced…

Paul Solen 13th may 2015
Paul Solen, Lake John-Hollow Angling, peg 12, 95-12-0

It had to be the hottest day of the year so far and skimmers were definitely sporning and that means the carp would soon follow suit so with margins out of bounds new methods would have to be explored, Draw bag (Solen) opted for the 6mm hard pellet and a tea bag into the open water, fishing more for the carp it was a plan that paid off today, several carp caught but only one over the magical 10lb mark, so a different match today and a free sun tan for all that took part.

The Legend that is Andy (The Greggors) Gregory was chasing the lake record today from peg 6 but alas was 20lb+ short of the target with a mere 140lb…

Andy G 9th May 2015 Andy gregory 9th May 2015 Andy Gregs 9th may 2015
Andy Gregory, Drennan-Borden, peg 6, 140-12-0

Andy is serious about his fishing and as these pictures show he is just as serious about he’s gurning, the rubber faced Watford based Greggors has had a fish a put from the off the peg only has 3ft of water at best and 2ft 6in of that was solid with lovely jubbly fish, when asked where he caught his fish he said, “a few here and a few there”, very helpful so after the match we had a good chat and i got the details out of him, a few fish on worm, a few on dead maggot and a few on the meat, so the fish were very much carnivores this week, skimmers and carp tight to the far bank and inner margins, Greggors you are the Lake John Gurning Champion 2015…………………..Quality

The wind and rain blew all night and they forecast it would be the same today, for once the weather people were sock on, it was horrid, todays top jockey was an old junior school mate of mine and today makes this his first win ever at Lake John and to add to the glory it was a golden peg as well, nice things happen to nice people and Darren was made up, yes it was the same winning peg as last week but you have still got to catch em, all silver fish on a meat and corn combo at 6m directly in front of the peg, the weather was dreadful but the fishing was ding dong bring it on, with four weights topping the ton you can’t ask for more and its probably worth mentioning that the lowest weight today was 79lb, wow, however the winner did manage to get a little egg on his face as just after weighing in what was the be the winning weight Darren fell in head first, what a chump, I mean champ……..ha ha ha….. Darren well done today and thanks for making this victory something to write about, no-one laughed at you mate honest, we laughed with ya……well done today and enjoy all that extra lolly….

Paul Dunn walked the lake pre match and predicted the area he thought would the best on the day, and then goes and draws it, how’s that for luck…

Paul Dunn 2nd may

Same method as last week but double last weeks weight, this just proves how unpredictable this fishing malarky is, a brief walk round this morning and Paul noticed fish all over this corner of the lake and mentioned over breakfast how he fancied that corner to be the winning area today, how right he was, the only thing he didn’t predict was that he would draw it, he was off to his peg like a shot, Paul caught from the off, and from all over the peg, catching and resting areas, pellet to the hook, and just pipped the Basildon Babe Paul Hyde this week.
